With dozens of national and international tours over the past 25 years, the Philadelphia Virtuosi has dazzled audiences from Los Angeles to New York’s Lincoln Center and from Rio de Janeiro to Moscow’s iconic Tchaikovsky Hall. Their unique and powerful performances have re-defined the classical music experience. Founder and Music Director Daniel Spalding, recognized as “one of the most innovative conductors on today’s music scene” is bringing to the Uptown Theater a new exclusive production designed to leave audiences not just entertained, but enthralled.

Teaming up with sensational Flamenco dancer Liliana Ruiz, Maestro Spalding and his 22 piece orchestra includes a unique makeup of strings and five virtuoso percussionists performing on over 40 instruments. Add to that the amazing footwork, the clatter of the castanets and the brilliant costumes of Liliana Ruiz, and we have an exciting and unique interpretation of Bizet’s “Carmen” as arranged by Russian composer Rodin Shchedrin – his most played and most famous work. The Philadelphia Virtuosi’s CD recording of this work was a Grammy finalist. This program will also include “Danzon” by Leonard Bernstein and Three Tangos by Astor Piazzolla, Argentina’s most revered composer, again using drums, marimbas and xylophones to bring forth the authentic flavor and syncopated rhythms of the music.

Ms. Ruiz served as Artistic Director for the Centro Asturiano dance ensemble for ten years. This group performed at the magnificent Palacio de Bellas Artes, and had the honor to perform a few times for the King Juan Carlos I of Spain, his wife Queen Sofia, and Prince Felipe of Asturias. Ms. Ruiz has performed Classical Spanish dances with the two-time Grammy Award-winning pianist Peter Nero and the Philly Pops at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, the New Jersey Capital Philharmonic, and many other orchestras throughout the USA.
Liliana is well known in the New York City area where she has performed on numerous stages including as a star performer on Broadway at the Cashama Theater. Liliana is presently the choreographer for the play Azul, under the direction of La Fábrica Theater Company. She also performs with the band La Revancha throughout the USA including NYC, Los Angeles, San Diego, Cleveland, and others.
